PCCC member Tina H. from Pacifica, CA on how potential Social Security cuts would affect her family:

“After my husband and I worked hard for 60 years, we had to let go of our home. His health cost, which I paid for privately ate up most of my retirement… Without the help of a $700 a month Social Security check to pay my rent, I would not be able to pay it otherwise.”

Daniel,

“Devastating.” “Horrific.” “Homeless.”

Those are all words PCCC members used to describe the prospect of cuts to Social Security — which are being considered by Alan Simpson’s “deficit commission” and may be voted on soon by Congress.

The good news is: Thanks to your help, an amazing 80 members of Congress have signed Progressive Caucus Chairman Rep. Grijalva’s letter to President Obama saying they’ll vote against any proposal that cuts Social Security.

The bad news is: Representative Todd Akin hasn’t signed yet.

Can you call Rep. Akin and ask him to sign the Grijalva letter opposing cuts to Social Security? Click here for the phone number and a script.

In the last week, the number of House signers skyrocketed from 6 to 80 — and over 27,000 PCCC members became “citizen signers” of the Grijalva letter.

Our friends at MoveOn, CREDO, and Social Security Works have been hammering offices with calls. — and our sister organization, the P Street Project (the progressive alternative to K Street lobbyists), has been reaching out to congressional staff.

But Rep. Akin needs to hear from you.

We only have a short time that Congress is in session before they recess for the elections, but they may vote on the commissions proposal immediately after the election so it’s important to get them on the record now. Can you call right now while Rep. Akin is still in his DC office? It just takes a minute, click here for the number and script.

Don’t forget to let us know how it went, so we can follow up with their staff!

Thanks for being a bold progressive,

Julia Rosen, Stephanie Taylor, Adam Green, Forrest Brown, and the rest of the PCCC team
